Google is one of the big names to start manufacturing in Bharat, as companies around the world are looking to expand their supply chains amid the tough times.Google’s Chrome operating system-powered Chromebooks will be made at HP’s Flex facility in Chennai, where they’ve been making a bunch of laptops and desks since last August. The production started on October 2, and it’ll meet the demand for budget-friendly PCs from Bharat’s education sector. Chromebooks are one of the most used laptops in schools around the world, but they haven’t caught on in Bharat yet, where Windows computers still dominate the market. Google’s Chromebooks will help Google stay ahead of Windows computers from Dell, Lenovo and Asus.Bharat has a large demand of laptops and computers in the domestic market, but almost all of this demand is currently being met by imports from the People’s Republic of China. This is something that New Delhi would like to see changed in the near future.
Bharat has witnessed a surge in the imports of electronics and laptops /computers over the past few years. In April-June, the total import volume of electronic goods rose to USD 6.96 billion as compared to USD 4.73 billion for the same period last year. The share of personal computers in the total imports was between 4-7 percent.
In April-May, the highest share of the total imports was in the personal computers category, which accounted for USD 555.36 million as compared to USD 622.26 million for the same period in the previous year.
