Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as we call him fondly,
founded Arzi Hakumat-e-Azad Hind, in Japanese-occupied Singapore during World
War II on October 21 in 1943.
In short, we also call it Azad Hind, the Provisional
Government of Free India. This was the Indian government-in-exile.
Azad Hind had its own currency, court system and
military-force, which was 40,000-strong and known as the Indian National Army
(INA).
It was supported by Japan, where Bose had arrived in
1943 from Europe, after having absconded from Bharat. It was a part of the
political movement originating in the 1940s outside Bharat with the sole aim of
allying with the Axis powers to liberate India from British rule.
In the notice proclaiming the formation of Azad Hind,
Bose says after Bharat was freed of the British and the Americans, Azad Hind
will be founded on Indian soil as an “India of the Indians”.
