In the aftermath of the severe flood, the Indian Army
jointly with the Border Road Organization (BRO) and civil administration has
successfully finished the construction of the second Bailey bridge over the
Teesta River at Mangan-Sankalang in Sikkim.
The newly-built bridge has facilitated the movement of
vehicles and the delivery of relief materials to areas affected by flooding.
Two bridges were built due to the width of the river
at the crossing site and the formation of an island. The first of these bridges
was completed on October 22.
The second bridge, which was completed four days ahead
of its deadline, was inaugurated by Pintso Lepcha, the Member of the
Legislative Assembly (MLA) for DZONGU, North Sikkim, in the presence of
officials from the Indian Army, BRO, and Civil Administration.
The flash flood in Teesta River that hit Sikkim in the
wee hours of October 4 left at least 78 people dead in the Northeastern State
and neighbouring northern West Bengal.
