The Centre has initiated Jal Diwali – Women
for Water, Water for Women Campaign – in Meghalaya with the celebration at Urkhla Water
Treatment Plant in Jowai.
Under this initiative by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs that commenced from November 7 to 9, women self-help group (SHG) members visited water treatment plants for exposure to the various processes involved in
supplying clean and safe drinking water to households.
The main objective
of the visit was to foster a sense of belonging and ownership among women
towards the water infrastructure.
After the tour was
completed, a small meeting was convened to record the testimonials and feedback
from the participants.
While interacting
with the SHG members, the officials explained the various processes involved in
water treatment and emphasised on the importance of water and the need to
conserve it.
Jal Diwali
programme has been organized in three locations in Meghalaya. Similar exposures
have been planned for at Mawphlang and Nongstoin.
