Suella Braverman was sacked as the Interior Minister by
United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a move that came after days of escalating
pressure on the latter due to her contentious remarks on pro-Palestine protest
marches in the country.
British media reported that the firing came owing to a
UK cabinet reshuffle. UK PM Sunak has appointed James Cleverly as the new Home
Secretary.
James Cleverly has been serving as the Foreign
Secretary since September last year, and will now take on the Home Office.
Born to immigrant parents, Indian-origin Suella
Braverman has always been embroiled in controversies and vocal against
immigration.
This is the second time that she has been sacked from
the UK cabinet. Braverman was forced to resign from former Prime Minister Liz
Truss’s cabinet last year over another controversy.
Last week, Suella Braverman went against Rishi Sunak,
and published an article that criticised the police action on protests that
took place recently.
In the article, she claimed that cops “played
favourites” while handling left “pro-Palestinian mobs” and were “tougher” on
right-wing extremists. The write-up also likened Gaza ceasefire demonstrations
to Northern Ireland marches, primarily done by unionists.
Earlier this month, Braverman said on X that those
sleeping on the streets in tents are doing so as a “lifestyle choice”.
She added rows of tents cannot be allowed to be put on
streets lest British cities become like Los Angeles and San Francisco, where “weak
policies” have caused an explosion of crimes and consumption of drugs.
Last year, in October, while she was the UK Home
Secretary in Truss’s cabinet, she was filmed saying it was her “dream” to watch
asylum seekers being deported to Rwanda.
Later, during a Tory party conference, she said that
migration should be reduced to “tens of thousands”.
Weeks after the ‘dream’ remark, Braverman was forced
to resign from Truss’s cabinet after she sent an official document to a
colleague from her personal email, a major breach of UK ministerial rules. This
move made her the shortest-serving home secretary in UK history since 1834.
She, however, was back in the UK cabinet and in the
same role in less than a week under Rishi Sunak following the toppling of Truss’s
administration.
In yet another dig at migrants, Suella Braverman said this
September that asylum seekers lie about their sexuality to get refugee status
in UK.
She claimed that people “purport to be gay when they
are not actually gay” during an interview for a programme at the ITV Network.
