In a major achievement in bringing back
the extremists to the mainstream, four United Liberation Front of
Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadres surrendered before the Assam Police in
Guwahati on Wednesday.
Highlighting that often young, innocent
people are misled and they join ULFA “thinking of something”, DGP GP Singh
said, “They have realised it is all futile. So they contacted us and have come
back home. We should not call this surrender. This is homecoming.”
The Assam DGP feels that rehabilitation should
not only be regarding the quantum of money being given to them rather “it is
the commitment of society and the government to make them self-dependent”.
Rehabilitation should be, to an extent, “providing
an environment to them where they provide employment to others with their
leadership qualities. Since they mostly serve in ULFA, they acquire leadership
qualities in the meantime”, noted DGP Singh.
The cadres, who surrendered are, Captain
Bikram Axom alias Nayan Patmaut of Charaideo district, LT Dipok Hatiboruah
alias Dibya Axom, CPL Montu Moran alias Latest Axom alias Kulang Moran and
Palash Moran alias Gopal Axom of Tinsukia district.
Special DGP Harmeet Singh and ADGP
Special Branch Hiren Chandra Nath were also present during the event at the
police headquarters.
Two Thailand Hand grenades, one Austria-made
9X19 Pistol and 9 mm ammunition-25 rds have been recovered from them. All of
them have been trained in warfare for 2-3 months in neighbouring Myanmar.
In 2023, at least 11 ULFA(I) cadres
surrendered to the State and have come back to the mainstream.
Assam Police officials stated a total of
five incidents have been committed by ULFA(I) this year in which 16 ULFA(I)
cadres were arrested and one was killed in police action.
