Actor Ryan Gosling, known for his role in ‘The Notebook’, shared thoughts on a potential sequel to ‘Barbie’. During a panel discussion in London, Gosling mentioned his uncertainty about the sequel’s existence and expressed interest in a variation of his character Ken, suggesting a “husky Ken” or “Sandwich Ken”.
Despite ‘Barbie’ becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023, earning over $1.44 billion worldwide, there are no official plans for a sequel. Co-star America Ferrera, who plays Gloria in the movie, emphasized that neither writer-director Greta Gerwig nor star Margot Robbie, who also produced the film, initially intended to create a franchise.
Ferrera highlighted that Gerwig and Robbie put their all into the movie, not envisioning it as the start of a long series. However, she acknowledged the uncertainty, playfully speculating about the possibility of a Ken spinoff.
Robbie, discussing the potential sequel, expressed mixed feelings. While proud of the first movie’s originality, she acknowledged the joy of working with the cast and crew. Gerwig, the director, had earlier expressed hopes for the movie to launch a Barbie cinematic universe with various Barbie-themed films.
While Robbie did not rule out the idea of a sequel, she emphasized that it would need to meet high expectations. Gerwig, currently involved in Netflix’s adaptations of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, expressed her desire to return to “Barbie Land” due to the film’s tone, humor, and joyful atmosphere.
