Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh,
reacting sharply to Mizoram’s newly-elected counterpart Lalduhoma over Moreh
remark, has urged him to extend support in restoring peace rather than
interfering in the internal matter of in the State.
The Manipur CM expressed his reaction
during the observance ceremony of Nupee Lal Numit, organised in commemoration
of the brave women freedom fighters of the British colonial era, at the GP
Women’s College Central Hall.
As Mizoram CM Lalduhoma had asked
Manipur Police not to harass people of Moreh, addressing the function as the chief
guest, Biren Singh said, “Passing such comment by the Chief Minister of other State
is little beyond Constitution. What is happening in the State is the internal
matter and should be dealt by State itself.”
He continued, “The Mizoram CM doesn’t
know exactly what is happening in Moreh. The place is inhabited by many
communities such as Meitei, Tamil, Kukis, Thadou among others. I would like to
make an earnest appeal to extend support in restoring peace in my State
irrespective of caste and community. I never say anything when there was Bru
controversy in Mizoram rather we pray to restore peace in Mizoram.”
Biren Singh appreciated other
neighbouring States for expressing their concern and support in connection with
present crisis of Manipur and to restore peace.
He shared due to political crisis in
neighbouring country Myanmar, many outsiders are still in the State, which is
providing humanitarian service to them. However, at the same time precautionary
steps are also being taken up to reduce influx of refugees by taking biometric
test in strategic location such as Moren and Kamjong areas.
Biren Singh underscored the contribution
of womenfolk in every pivotal moment of the State since time immemorial.
Acknowledging the selfless contribution
of women, he announced two initiatives taken up by the State Government in
their honour, which included renaming of road stretch from Governor’s Traffic
Point to Pureiromba Khongnangkhong as ‘Nupi Lan Road’ and the ‘Chief Minister’s
Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme’.
Elucidating on the newly launched Chief
Minister’s Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, N Biren informed that
women who are above 40 years of age, with no source of income and not covered
under any welfare scheme taken up by the government, would be provided
financial assistance of Rs 6,000 per annum.
The Chief Minister further recalled the
role taken by Manipuri women in regaining their motherland from Awa during the
Seven Years Devastation period.
Acknowledging the contribution made by
women in society, Oinam MLA AC Irengbam Nalini Devi and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA
AC Sagolshem Kebi Devi shared the stage with CM Biren Singh as president and
guest of honour respectively.
