Assam Director General of Police or DGP
GP Singh, in a stern message to proscribed militant group ULFA-I, said people’s
safety will be ensured by eliminating all threats to the Northeastern State. However
action will be taken by remaining within the ambit of law.
United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent
or ULFA-I, after a lull, disturbed the peaceful environment of Assam again on
November 22. The outfit triggered an explosion near an arm installation in
eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district, where the AFSPA is still in force.
Two similar blasts occurred in
neighbouring Sibsagar and Tinsukia district in December.
While claiming responsibility for the incidents,
the ULFA-I said the same was done in response to DGP Singh’s attempts to call
the long ULFA-I conflict only a law and order issue.
“The conflict is political that can only
be addressed politically,” post explosion, the Ulfa-I said on December 15.
Showing his commitment to safeguard
people’s safety, DGP Singh expressed, “We don’t want Assam to relive the
horrors of the past few decades. The Assam Police are completely dedicated to
preserving the peace and security of our people, and we will not be drawn into
unnecessary conflicts.”
The DGP’s address underlined the
importance of adhering to the Constitution of India in their operations and at
the same time spoke on Assam Police’s successes in reclaiming unlawfully encroached
land.
“Assam Police, in the past two and a
half years, have freed one lakh bighas of land that were unlawfully encroached by
individuals of Bangladeshi descent,” he mentioned.
ULFA-I has links with Bangladesh, said DGP
Singh, pointing out that the group, previously based in Bangladesh, had caused
havoc in Assam. It still maintained relationship with relatives in the neighbouring
country.
Insisting upon the need for increased
policing over separatist outfits, mainly those camping in Myanmar, DGP Singh
urged the people of Assam to consider the advantages of strong law enforcement.
“We will take legal action against
anyone who tries to sabotage Assam’s growth efforts,” he announced, emphasizing
the proactive stance of the State Police.
“Police will eliminate all threats to
the State. Assam Police will continue to operate within the bounds of the law,
acting in the best interests of the people and the progress of the State,”
pledged the Assam DGP.
