In China, Beijing based Nanjiao weather
station has recorded the longest cold wave since it started documenting in 1951.
The temperature rose to above zero degrees Celsius for the first time in days on
the afternoon of Sunday, reported State media Beijing Daily.
The low temperature remained below zero
degrees for above 300 hours since the temperature first dropped on December 11.
This month, whole China reeled under a strong
cold wave, leading to multiple system failures and halting of the heating
capacity of some cities in northern part of the country. Among these are Central
Province’s Henan, Jiaozuo, Puyang and Pingdingshan.
The last two cities have cut heating to many
government buildings and State-owned enterprises to save the limited heating
resources “for hospitals, schools and residential buildings”.
Two days ago, with the advent of the
cold weather in capital city Beijing, many issues have cropped up with the city’s
metro system.
As per Beijing’s transportation
authority, hundreds of commuters, dozens of them with fractured bones, were
sent to the hospital earlier in December after two trains had collision on a
busy metro line during snowy situation.
The cold-bitter temperatures hindered
rescue efforts after a deadly earthquake this month in northwest Gansu
province.
