With an objective to reshape the
educational framework in the State, the Assam Government will reduce the number of Private Madrasas from 3,000 to 1,000. Additionally, a special census of indigenous Muslims or Assamese
Muslims will be conducted by the end of 2024.
Private Madrasas are constitutionally
protected. However, Assam Police and the Education department have been taking efforts to
reduce the number with more focus on education through schools, colleges,
and universities instead of Madrasas. They are negotiating with the committees related to Madrasas, stated Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The census, focusing on both rural
villages and urban municipal areas, will identify and record the data about distinct
communities within the Assamese Muslim population.
Previously too, to take forward the
Assam Government’s vision in the education sector, it had shut down all
government-run madrasas and converted those into general schools.
The State Government’s action
demonstrates Assam’s endeavours towards the overall development of students by
modernizing education and educational institutions equipped with required infrastructure
and learning environment.
