Assam’s largest and bustling Lokpriya
Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport marked a remarkable milestone by
handling close to 5.6 million passengers. The airport, located in capital city
Guwahati and a central hub for Bharat’s Northeast region, demonstrated a robust
jump from the previous year’s count of 4.6 million.
Operated by Adani Airports, the airfield
managed around 2.9 million arrivals and 2.7 million departures all across the
year. Its terminals were designed for fewer passengers, however, it displayed strength
to manage a huge volume of traffic.
During peak hours, Terminal 1 (domestic)
can accommodate 500 passengers whereas Terminal 2 (international) has strength of
125 passengers. The airport has a peak hour capability of 1,300 passengers,
with 1,000 allocated for domestic and 300 for international flights on the
whole.
At this airport, there are six boarding
gates at the domestic terminal and one at the international terminal for
passengers. To ensure hassle free travel experience, it has facility of 14
check-in counters, 8 immigration counters, 4 security check booths and 2
customs counters.
Besides, number of aircraft movements is
impressive with more than 46,000 in 2023 and about equal numbers of arrival and
departure flights.
The airport is gaining significance as a
travel hub as on Christmas Eve, a record 19,290 passengers were managed.
In near future, the commissioning of a
new terminal is awaited. It will led to twofold demand capacity. To boost connectivity,
new routes to Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Bangkok as well as discussions for
additional domestic and international destinations are on cards.
