Mizoram has been providing shelters to over 31,300 people from Myanmar following the military coup in February 2021. The refugees mainly belonged to the Chin community, who have ethnic relationships with the Mizos.
Besides, over 1,000 members belonging to Bawm community sought safe haven in Mizoram owing to a military offensive in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts in November 2022.
Apart from this, more than 9,000 internally displaced people have been taking refuge in Mizoram after Manipur’s ethnic clash in May 2023.
These humanitarian crises led to the financial crisis in Mizoram and subsequently, the State Government had sought monetary help of Rs 10 crore from the Centre to aid the internally displaced people from Manipur.
The meetings will additionally serve as an opportunity for CM Lalduhoma to set up rapport and discuss broader issues pertinent to Mizoram’s welfare and its role in the regional geopolitical landscape.
