In a historic first, Yarenjungla
Longkumer from Nagaland is poised to become judge in the Gauhati High Court after
the Supreme Court Collegium made recommendation on January 4.
Judicial Officer Yarenjungla Longkume along
with Advocate Shamima Jahan were recommended for appointment as Judges of the
Gauhati High Court by the Collegium of the Apex Court including Chief Justice DY
Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai.
The recommendation was first made by the
High Court Collegium on May 29 in 2023, as per its resolution. Subsequently, the
Top Court Collegium reviewed the material placed on record on October 17.
The Gauhati HC Chief Justice and its
Collegium, through letters dated October 19 and November 7, forwarded the details
regarding their suitability, based on government inputs in response to opinions
sought by the SC Collegium.
Besides, SC Judges, experts with the
affairs of the Gauhati HC, were consulted to establish their suitability and fitness.
The Apex Court Collegium, thereafter, found
them suitable for appointment as the Gauhati High Court Judges and recommended to
appoint both for the same.
Longkumer has served as the District and
Sessions Judge in Kohima and Peren other than holding the position of Law &
Justice Department Judicial Secretary among others.
Longkumer would be the first HC judge
from Nagaland after getting the government’s approval and notification about their
appointment.
