Tripura has received Rs 81 crore from the Centre for setting up 274 solar micro grids in far-flung areas of the Northeastern State to light up as many 9,250 houses.
The micro grids will be set up in hamlets in Dhalai, Unakoti, and South, West and North Tripura districts under the project of the Ministry of Development of Northeast Region or DoNER.
These are the districts where “conventional electricity appears non profitable” to Tripura’s power utility owing to low population density and geographical isolation and thus “has not reached the people yet”, said Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency’s official.
The installation work is likely to commence in the current fiscal and the number of grids in a specific habitation will be determined by its populace. Each solar micro grid’s installed capacity will range from 2 KW to 25 KW.
The beneficiary requires to pay a tiny amount for power consumption though the tariff has not been finalised yet.
TREDA calculation shows Tripura has a solar power capacity of 2,000 MW, of which currently only 19.50 MW is being generated.
The State has launched Tripura Energy Vision of generating 500 MW of solar power by 2030 in recent days.
