The Directorate of Estates or DoE served notice to former Trinamool Congress-TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for not vacating her government bungalow.
Owing to expulsion from the Lok Sabha last year on December 8 and cancellation of allotment, she was asked to vacate the house by January 7. The DoE has directed Mahua to handover her response to the notice within three days seeking to know “why she has still not vacated her government accommodation”, informed insider.
Mahua was declared guilty of “unethical conduct” and for allegedly accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and sharing her user ID and password of the Parliament website with him. Subsequently, she faced expulsion.
The TMC leader was directed by the Delhi High Court to approach the DoE with a request for permitting her to continue to occupy the government accommodation allotted to her, on January 4.
Justice Subramoniun Prasad pointed out rules allow an occupant to extend his or her stay for up to six months on payment of certain charges in exceptional circumstances.
The court, noting it has not made any observations on the merits of the matter, left the issue to the Directorate of Estates and allowed Mahua to withdraw her petition.
The rules mandate serving notice to a resident before eviction and the government has to take action to evict the petitioner in accordance with law, the court added.
