Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has been served a notice by the party’s Tamil Nadu disciplinary committee for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Rahul Gandhi.
The notice comes in response to Karti Chidambaram’s remarks during a television interview where he suggested that PM Modi is more popular than Rahul Gandhi. Disciplinary panel chief KR Ramasamy issued the show-cause notice, expressing concern over Chidambaram’s statements.
In the interview, Karti Chidambaram expressed confidence in Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs, a stance that differs from the Congress party’s opposition to the use of EVMs due to concerns about their reliability.
This further added to the discontent within the party, as highlighted by party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who recently conveyed dissatisfaction with the Election Commission of India’s response to EVM-related concerns.
Karti Chidambaram, who appeared before the Enforcement Directorate last week in connection with an alleged money laundering case related to the issuance of Chinese visas, dismissed the ED summons as routine and a “futile exercise”.
The Congress MP from Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga attributed the repeated summons to the approaching Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing that he had already responded to similar inquiries.
The allegations against Karti Chidambaram involve the illegal facilitation of visas for 263 Chinese nationals in connection with a power project in Punjab, for which he is accused of receiving ₹50 lakh.
The Enforcement Directorate initiated a money laundering case in May 2023 related to the Chinese visa ‘scam’.
