In a continuation of the trend of renaming places in Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has taken a significant step by passing a proposal to change the name of the Ghaziabad district. The decision was reached during a recent meeting, with the majority voting in favour of the motion. Notably, two members of the corporation voted against the proposal.
During the meeting, three potential names for the district were finalized: Gaj Prastha, Doodheshwar Nath Nagar, and Harnandipuram. These proposed names will now be forwarded to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his consideration and final approval.
Ghaziabad Mayor Sunita Dayal highlighted there has been a growing demand from the public for a name change in the district. “A proposal will be sent to the CM after the discussion with the board. The final decision on the name change rests with the CM,” stated Mayor Dayal.
Adding to the significance of the proposal, district’s Doodheshwar Nath temple head priest Mahant Narayan Giri mentioned he had a meeting with CM Yogi last month. During this meeting, the Chief Minister assured him he would seriously consider the request for a name change.
Historically, Ghaziabad was known as Gaj Prastha before being renamed by Mughal emperor Akbar’s brother-in-law, Ghazuddin. The proposed names aim to restore historical and cultural significance to the district.
“We consider it as our good fortune that the municipal corporation of Ghaziabad has passed this proposal. We are confident that Yogi ji will restore the glory of the old times to the city,” expressed Mahant Narayan Giri.
He emphasized that names carrying a colonial tag or the legacy of slavery should not persist post-independence.
As the proposal moves forward, it adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the renaming of places in Bharat, reflecting the desire to reconnect with historical roots and cultural identity. The final decision now lies in the hands of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who will decide the future name of the Ghaziabad district.
