Bharat’s prolific fast bowler Mohammed
Shami is currently on a hiatus from cricket, raising questions about his future
plans. Having excelled as the top wicket-taker in the ODI Cricket World Cup
2023, Shami’s absence from the South Africa tour and the upcoming Afghanistan
T20I series has sparked speculation.
Reports indicate he might even miss the
initial Tests against England, although Shami insists he is training diligently
and could be fit for the series.
In the longer formats, Shami has
continuously emerged as Bharat’s premier bowler, showcasing his talent with
stellar performances for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. However, the ambiguity
surrounding his role in T20 internationals persists. Despite being honoured
with the Arjuna award, Shami acknowledges lacking clarity about his future in
the shortest format.
His last T20I appearance was in the T20
World Cup against England, and since then, he has not been included in the T20
squad. Expressing uncertainty about his T20 future, Shami emphasized the
importance of showcasing his rhythm and performance in T20 matches before the
World Cup.
In a recent development, a report
suggests that the Board of Control for Cricket in India or BCCI is gearing up
for a crucial discussion with Mohammed Shami to know what he intends to do in
future.
Shami has taken a lot of workload in recent
years, acknowledged BCCI adding, “This talk was expected to happen in South
Africa. The management and selectors will talk to him very soon since he didn’t
travel with the team.”
The BCCI is keen on understanding
Shami’s preferences and assessing the extent of cricket he intends to play
beyond the IPL and Test matches. The upcoming dialogue is expected to shed
light on the veteran pacer’s future trajectory in the dynamic world of
international cricket.
