In a significant move to bolster food
security, the Assam Government has unveiled plans to issue ration cards to over
42 lakh new beneficiaries starting January 16. This initiative aims to provide
crucial support to the underprivileged, granting them access to subsidized
grain supplies and additional benefits through the Public Distribution System or
PDS.
During a media briefing, CM Dr
Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the State Government’s commitment to ensuring
that all eligible citizens receive ration cards. The distribution process, led
by cabinet ministers in each constituency, will span from January 16 to January
25.
CM Himanta highlighted the significance
of this initiative, not only as vital assistance but also as an indicator of a
positive trend in achieving population balance within the State. The plan
targets issuing ration cards to families with a minimum of four members,
benefitting a total of 10,73479 beneficiaries.
Furthermore, Dr Himanta outlined future
plans, stating that all individuals with ration cards will be eligible to
participate in the Orunodoi scheme. Discussions are underway to integrate a PM
insurance scheme specifically designed for ration cardholders.
To qualify for a ration card in Assam,
applicants must have permanent residency and an annual family income not
exceeding Rs 4 lakh. The government has streamlined the application process,
requiring detailed personal information, birth certificates for minors,
certified copies of Voter Lists, and evidence of payment or taxation on land
revenue receipts.
Notably, this initiative aligns with the
government’s commitment to improving food access for its citizens, showcasing a
proactive approach to enhancing the lives of disadvantaged residents.
The allocation process includes not only
providing essential goods at discounted prices but also offering an Ayushman
card as an additional benefit, ensuring dual advantages for new recipients. The
Assam Government’s proactive stance underscores its dedication to prioritizing
the welfare of the State’s residents.
