A New York Court has ordered the federal government to issue a response to a motion filed by lawyers of Nikhil Gupta seeking material that were in connection to the charges against him in a conspiracy to kill a Khalistani terrorist on American soil.
“On January 4, 2024, a motion was filed by the defence counsel to seek production of the discovery, requesting that the Court issue an order directing the Government to start providing the defence counsel with the material of the discovery. The Court asked to file a reply to the Motion to Compel in three days of the date of this order,” US District Judge Victor Marrero marked in the order.
US federal prosecutors have charged Gupta with the claims that he was working with a Bharatiya government employee in the foiled plot to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is a holder of dual citizenship of the US and Canada.
Gupta, 52, of Bharat faces the charges of murder-for-hire. This charge of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Matthew G. Olsen informed.
Prosecutors revealed that the Czech authorities arrested and detained Gupta on June 30, 2023. He was the subject of the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic. The arrest of Gupta took place in the Czech Republic at the request of the United States in connection with his participation in the plot to murder the individual.
