Cricket South Africa or CSA has taken
the decision to remove David Teeger from his role as captain of the under-19
side due to safety concerns, just ahead of the 2024 U19 World Cup set to
commence on January 19, hosted by South Africa.
CSA released a statement confirming
Teeger’s removal as the skipper, citing safety considerations. Teeger, who had
made pro-Israeli statements in November the previous year, will, however,
continue as a squad player.
“In all the circumstances, CSA has
decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament. This
is in the best interests of all the players, the SA U19 team, and David
himself. David will remain an important and active member of the squad, and we
wish him and the team every success in the tournament. The newly appointed
captain will be announced in due course,” read CSA’s statement.
The decision comes amid concerns related
to potential protests during the U19 World Cup, particularly focusing on Teeger
and the risk of conflict or violence. South Africa, named as the new hosts
after Sri Lanka’s suspension by the ICC due to government interference, has
been receiving regular security updates regarding the tournament.
Teeger’s pro-Israeli statements,
particularly praising Israeli soldiers at an awards ceremony in November,
influenced CSA’s decision. The U19 World Cup is expected to attract attention
and potential protests related to the conflict in Gaza.
South Africa, placed in Group B for the
U19 World Cup, will compete against England, Scotland, and the West Indies in
the upcoming tournament.
