Taking a proactive measure towards
resolving the long-standing Assam-Mizoram boundary dispute, the Zoram People’s
Movement-ZPM Government in Mizoram has constituted a dedicated ‘Boundary
Committee.’ This crucial committee, spearheaded by State Home Minister
Sapdanga, aims to delve into the complexities surrounding the contentious
border areas.
The official notification, issued on
January 3, outlines the composition of the committee. Alongside State Home
Minister Sapdanga, key members include the Minister for Environment, Forests and
Climate Change, the State Home Department Commissioner, the Chief Minister’s
advisor, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police.
Notably, the committee will feature
representatives from recognized political parties in the State, such as BJP,
Congress, Mizo National Front, ZPM, AAP, and others.
Mizoram shares a 165-kilometer boundary
with Assam, encompassing three districts on each side – Cachar, Karimganj, and
Hailakandi in Assam, and Mamit, Kolasib, and Aizawl in Mizoram.
The longstanding border dispute
escalated to violence in 2021, resulting in the tragic death of six Assam
police officers during clashes between the forces of the two States. Since
then, Assam has been actively seeking resolutions to the ongoing disputes.
