As per sources, the sadhus, en route to
Gangasagar, sought directions from a group of women. Startled by the sadhus
covered in ash, the women raised an alarm, leading to a mob attacking the
seers.
Upon receiving information, police
swiftly intervened, rescuing the sadhus and facilitating their journey to
Gangasagar, a revered pilgrimage site in West Bengal.
Officials denied presence of any communal
dimension in the incident. The BJP, however, has criticized the Trinamool
Congress, alleging a breakdown in the law-and-order machinery. Numerous BJP
leaders have expressed their condemnation on the social media platform X,
denouncing the reported attack on the sadhus.
Hooghly BJP MP Locket Chatterjee
remarked, “Outraged by the Purulia incident! Sadhus en route to Gangasagar
brutally attacked – shocking evidence of deteriorating safety under TMC. Mamata
Banerjee’s regime shields terrorists like Shahjahan Sheikh, while sadhus face
brutal lynching. A grim reality for Hindus in Bengal.”
Officials revealed the sadhus were
repeatedly asked if they wanted to file a complaint, but they declined.
Purulia Trinamool Congress District president
Soumen Beltharia assured the incident is under investigation, and the truth
will be uncovered soon.
He stated, “The incident should not have
happened. There was a rumour spread, and angry mobs targeted the sadhus. Police
reached the spot and rescued the sadhus. We have also seen the video, and the
police will find out why the incident happened.”
