President Droupadi Murmu initiated her
extensive three-day tour of the Northeastern region with her arrival in
Meghalaya. The tour, spanning from January 15 to January 17, commenced with
President Murmu’s landing at Baljek Airport, Jengjal, where she was warmly
welcomed by Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma,
along with the presence of Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma.
Prior to her Meghalaya visit, President
Murmu arrived in Guwahati, where Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
extended a welcoming reception. The President, with a tight schedule, proceeded
directly to Meghalaya, marking the initiation of her regional tour.
During this comprehensive tour,
President Murmu is slated to partake in various significant events, with one of
the notable highlights being her role as the chief guest in the Golden Jubilee
celebrations of the Karbi Youth Festival. The tour encompasses a series of
crucial engagements, infrastructure inaugurations, and active participation in
local celebrations.
The opening ceremony unfolded with the
inauguration of the Meghalaya Games at the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura,
showcasing the President’s commitment to supporting sports and engaging with
the youth.
On January 16, President Murmu is
scheduled to address members of Self-Help Groups at Baljek Airport in Tura,
underscoring her dedication to grassroots-level empowerment and community
development.
A pivotal moment in the tour includes
the virtual laying of the foundation stone for the new Integrated
Administration Complex in Tura, symbolizing the commencement of a significant
infrastructure project set to enhance administrative efficiency in the region.
President Murmu’s visit places a
substantial focus on bolstering local infrastructure and tourism. She is set to
virtually inaugurate the upgraded Rongjeng Mangsang Adokgre Road and Mairang
Ranigodown Azra Road, anticipated to enhance connectivity and commerce.
Additionally, she will lay the
foundation stones for the Shillong Peak ropeway and tourist accommodations in
scenic villages like Kongthong, Mawlyngot, and Kudengrim, promoting sustainable
tourism and economic growth.
The President’s packed itinerary also
includes attending a civic reception hosted by the Meghalaya Government at the
Raj Bhavan in Shillong on January 16. These engagements underscore President
Murmu’s commitment to fostering growth and acknowledging the cultural heritage
of Meghalaya.
