President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the Northeastern
States took center stage as she inaugurated the 5th Meghalaya Games at Tura’s
PA Sangma Stadium, marking a historic moment for the region. The ceremony,
attended by dignitaries including Governor Phagu Chauhan and Chief Minister
Conrad K Sangma, showcased the vibrant sports culture and diverse heritage of
the Northeast.

In her address, President Murmu noted the PA Sangma football stadium is Bharat’s largest pre-engineered composite football stadium. She mentioned Northeast Bharat’s strong sports culture traditionally has immense potential for development of sports and sportspersons, particularly from tribal areas and therefore they should be nurtured. Additionally, our nation’s most beautiful feature, which is diversity, should be utilised to further encourage Bharat’s global image in the field of sports. She applauded the region’s promotion of women in sports and recognized
the contributions of Northeast athletes to Bharat’s international standing.
The President exuded confidence about Meghalaya Games’ role in encouraging athletes for excellence, promoting competitiveness and creating a vibrant sporting ecosystem. Besides, availability of courses on sports science, technology, management and coaching in the National Sports University will create a rich sports ecosystem in the region, she accentuated.
President Murmu appreciated Bharat’s immense growth of sporting culture at international level with the backing of the government’s new initiatives and encouragement. Khelo India is one such event. Stressing upon playing together to inculcate team spirit and competitiveness apart from maintaining physical and mental fitness, she urged the children and youth to learn at least one sport and participate in sports activities.
