The Assam Government has demonstrated
its efficiency in reducing poverty over the last nine years, highlighted Niti
Aayog’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index or MPI. The MPI noted a
substantial decrease, from 36.97 per cent in 2013-14 to 14.47 per cent in
2022-2023, in multidimensional poverty in the Northeastern State.
Assam is passing through “its most
prosperous era in modern history”, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote
on X post as almost 80 lakh people escaped poverty.

Attributing the feat to the leadership
of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre, the CM pointed out poverty
headcount ratio has dipped by 25 per cent in the last 3 years.
Taking cognizance of the current rapid
growth trajectory, CM Himanta exuded confidence over Assam’s significant
contribution in nation building in near future by emerging as one the top 5 States
in Bharat.
The Assam Orunodoi Scheme among numerous
initiatives and policies has helped the State in combating poverty. The State sponsored
initiatives like this support poor families through Direct Benefit Transfer or DBT
of Rs 1,250 per month, which was Rs 830 previously.
To alleviate standard of living of urban
poor, the Assam Government has launched the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National
Urban Livelihoods Mission or DAY-NULM in addition to that.
The MPI’s assessment of poverty in
multiple dimensions beyond monetary aspects is a globally recognized
comprehensive measure. The robust Alkire and Foster method, under its global
methodology, identifies people as poor based on a universally acknowledged
metric.
