Larsen & Toubro Construction’s railways
strategic business group has bagged a ‘mega order’ to spread 508 route km of
high-speed electrification system for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail or MAHSR
Project, popularly referred to as the bullet train project, said the company in
a filing to the BSE.
Trains will be able to travel at speed
of up to 320 kilometre per hour after this electrification system under this
project announced in 2017.
The Japan International Cooperation
Agency or JICA has financially supported the project and an authorised Japanese
agency acting for and on behalf of National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd
will implement it.
Though, Larsen & Toubro chose to keep
under wrap the exact value of the deal, the value is estimated to be between
₹10,000 crore and ₹ 15,000 crore as the order is termed as ‘mega’.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed
satisfaction over the progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project though
he evaded reporters’ questions on deadline for the project.
He maintained authorities will “proceed
section by section in a linear project” due to its complexity and the work speed
is “very good”.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Project’s viaduct has
been raised on 272 km out of the total 508 km route. Bridges on five out of eight
rivers on the route have been built. The 50-km-long section between Surat and
Billimora will be finished 2026. The bullet train corridor, facilitating Bharat’s
economic growth, will cover big commercial centres such as Mumbai, Thane, Vapi,
Surat, Vadodara, Anand and Ahmedabad.
Mumbai and Ahmedabad will become Bharat’s
first high-speed train corridor.
