In a fresh infiltration incident in the
aftermath of a recent skirmish with the People’s Army along the Karma River
near the border, as many as 278 soldiers from the Myanmar Army have sought
refuge in Bharat’s Northeastern State Mizoram.
Reports indicate these armed and equipped
personnel entered Indian territory in the Bandukba area of Lawngtlai District before
being escorted to the Assam Rifles camp, where they spent the night.
Similar incident unfolded previously too
when 151 Myanmarese soldiers, who had fled during armed clashes with an ethnic
insurgent group in their home country, sought asylum in Mizoram on January 2.
However, they were later airlifted back
to their country by the Myanmar Air Force from Mizoram capital Aizawl.
The soldiers had initially crossed the
Indian border and entered southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on December 29.
This escape was prompted by the Arakan Army, an insurgent group that overran
their camps near the international borders.
The latest influx of Myanmarese soldiers
seeking refuge raises questions about the ongoing conflict in Myanmar and its spill
over effects on neighbouring regions.
