Political clash intensified in Assam surrounding
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra with its entrance the State as Chief Minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on the Gandhi family, branding
them as the most corrupt in the country.
During a press conference, CM Himanta alleged
the family’s involvement in corruption ranging from the Bofors case to the
Bhopal gas tragedy, accusing them of aiding American businessman and then Union
Carbide Corporation CEO Warren Anderson’s escape.
The CM renamed the event ‘Miya Yatra’,
asserting its focus on the Miya community (local term used for Bangladeshi
Muslims) and questioning its authenticity.
Apart from this, CM Himanta expressed
skepticism about justice for Angkita Dutta, highlighting the unresolved cases
of the Assam movement martyrs. He questioned how Rahul Gandhi could deliver
justice when longstanding issues remain unaddressed.
The Assam CM’s remark came after Bharat
Jodo Nyay Yatra ran into a protest demonstration by Angkita Dutta and her
supporters in Sivasagar district’s Amguri. Following accusation on Indian Youth
Congress president Srinivas BV of sexual harassment, she was suspended from the
primary membership of the Grand Old Party last April.
