In a tit-for-tat exchange, Assam Chief
Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent
comment labeling him as the ‘most corrupt chief minister.’ Dr Himanta countered
by asserting that the ‘most corrupt family in the country’ is the Gandhi family
of the Congress.
Rahul Gandhi during the ‘Bharat Jodo
Nyay Yatra’ in Assam remarked the State was possibly witnessing the operation
of the “most corrupt government” in India.
“Today the BJP and your Chief Minister
(Himanta Biswa Sarma) are dividing Assam. Maybe, the most corrupt chief
minister in the country is the chief minister of Assam,” stated Gandhi,
addressing party workers. He pledged to address the issues of Assam during the
yatra.
In response, CM Himanta dismissed the
comments, declaring, “The Gandhi family is the most corrupt family in the
country. This is not Nyay Yatra, it’s Miya Yatra. Wherever there are Muslims,
they visit those places,” as reported by PTI.
The Assam CM’s reference to ‘Miya Yatra’
alludes to areas with a significant Muslim population, and he further
elaborated on the term ‘Miyas,’ identifying them as Muslims who migrated to
Assam from present-day Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) in successive waves
over time.
