Congress leader Rahul Gandhi encountered
a crowd during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam’s Nagaon district. The
incident unfolded as Gandhi and fellow leaders made a pit stop at a roadside
eatery in Ambagan while en route to their night halt in Rupohi, approximately
10 km away.
Protesters raised slogans against the MP
and displayed placards with messages such as ‘Anyay Yatra’ and ‘Rakibul go
back,’ referencing Samaguri Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Gandhi,
had earlier reached the central Assam district. The leaders addressed a public
rally in Kaliabor, with Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge in
attendance.
During the yatra, a group of BJP workers
chanted “Jai Shri Ram” and “Modi, Modi” slogans in front of Rahul Gandhi’s bus.
In response, the Congress leader waved, gave flying kisses, and stepped down to
engage with them. Gandhi shared a video of the incident, stating, “Our ‘Mohabbat
Ki Dukaan’ (shop of love) is open for everyone. Judega Bharat, Jeetega
Hindustan.”
Addressing a public meeting later, Gandhi
recounted the incident, asserting that the Congress is not afraid of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi or Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The BJP countered, claiming that Gandhi
was rattled by the slogans raised in his presence. BJP IT cell head Amit
Malviya commented, “If this is how rattled he is, how will he face the people
of this country in days ahead.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala
criticized Gandhi’s response to the slogans, calling it “shameful and atrocious
behaviour.”
The incident echoes a similar situation
during his earlier Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, where he made
similar gestures in response to “Modi, Modi” chants in Rajasthan.
