Tensions escalated in Guwahati as
clashes erupted between supporters of Rahul Gandhi and the police during the
re-entry of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra into Assam. The incident arose after
authorities denied permission for the yatra to enter the city through its main
routes, directing it to use the Guwahati bypass instead.
Visuals from the scene depicted Congress
supporters, bearing party flags, engaging with police personnel and attempting
to breach barricades, while Rahul Gandhi observed from a distance. The Assam Government’s
refusal to allow the yatra through prime routes prompted heightened security
measures at Khanapara, the city’s entry point.
Security measures included barricading
and a substantial deployment of police officials in the Khanapara Area, where
Rahul Gandhi’s yatra was set to arrive. The yatra continued its journey, with
plans to proceed through the Guwahati bypass and move on to Meghalaya after
Assam, ignoring the government’s request.
Amid the clash, Assam Chief Minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed DGP GP Singh to register a criminal case against
Rahul Gandhi for “provoking the crowd”.

using “naxalite tactics” alien to Assamese culture, citing unruly behaviour and
violation of agreed-upon guidelines, resulting in a massive traffic jam in
Guwahati.
