Assam Police has transferred the
criminal case against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders to the Crime
Investigation Department or CID on January 24. The case involves allegations of
violating guidelines, resulting in violence, provocation, and damage to public
property during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Guwahati.
Director General of Police GP Singh, in
a statement on platform X, mentioned the case has been transferred to CID Assam
for a thorough investigation through a Special Investigation Team or SIT to be
constituted by the ADGP of CID Assam. The FIR, filed under various sections
including non-bailable charges like assault on public servant, voluntarily
causing hurt, and causing grievous hurt, will be thoroughly examined by the
CID.
Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concerns about the alleged acts of violence,
provocation, and assault on police personnel by Congress leaders during the
yatra.
The clash occurred after Assam Police,
under CM Himanta’s directive, halted the yatra’s entry into Guwahati, leading
to protests from Congress workers.
The CM, critical of Rahul Gandhi’s
alleged role in provoking the crowd and violating guidelines, directed Assam
DGP GP Singh to register a criminal case against Gandhi. The CM emphasized such
tactics were alien to the peaceful State’s culture and instructed the police to
use social media footage as evidence.
The tensions escalated on January 23 in
Guwahati as supporters of Rahul Gandhi clashed with the police during the
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s re-entry into Assam. The denial of permission for the
yatra to use main routes inside Guwahati led to heightened security measures at
Khanapara, the city’s entry point.
