Rohan Bopanna, at 43, is basking in the
glory of an “amazing and incredible” achievement as he secures the top spot in
the ATP men’s doubles rankings, becoming the oldest World No. 1. His stellar
performance, paired with Matthew Ebden, propelled them to the semi-finals of
the Australian Open for the first time in Bopanna’s illustrious career.
The quarter-final victory over the
Argentinian duo Maximo Gonzalez & Andres Molteni not only marked a
significant milestone in Bopanna’s career but also ensured his ascent to the
pinnacle of men’s doubles rankings after the tournament concludes.
In an interview with Sony Sports
Network, Bopanna expressed his joy, emphasizing the importance of this win for
Indian tennis. “It feels absolutely amazing and incredible to be where I am
today, especially after 20 years of being in the sport and constantly trying to
achieve at the highest level. Indian tennis needed this,” said Bopanna.
Reflecting on the inspiration he hopes
to provide, Bopanna stated, “While watching sports, you always had idols
growing up and someone who inspired you. I hope my reaching the No. 1 position
inspires someone back home. With all the support I have received in the last
two decades, this is something I have to give back to the entire nation.”
The achievement comes on the heels of Bharat’s
No. 1 singles star Sumit Nagal’s impressive run in the Australian Open 2024,
breaking a 34-year wait for a victory against a seeded player in the singles
main draw. Bopanna’s historic climb to No. 1 in men’s doubles adds another
reason for Indian tennis fans to celebrate and cherish the tournament.
Acknowledging the role of fans and the
potential of talented youngsters in Indian tennis, Bopanna remarked, “I think
every fan deserves the credit. Indian tennis deserves a lot more credit. Today
is a wonderful day to start this journey, and I hope lots and lots of Indian
players reach the highest level in tennis.”
Looking ahead, the Bopanna-Ebden duo is
set to face Zhang Zhizhen and Tomas Machac in the Australian Open 2024
semi-final at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday.
