The Land Ports Authority of India or LPAI
is actively working towards the inauguration of its Sabroom facility in South
Tripura by February. Once operational, the land port will establish a direct
link to Bangladesh’s Ramgarh port, currently in the construction phase.
LPAI Chairman Aditya Mishra, in an
effort to expedite the project, personally visited the Sabroom land port construction
site, carefully reviewing the ongoing progress.
The official stated, “Approximately 95
per cent of the cargo terminal at the Sabroom facility has been completed, with
80 per cent of the passenger terminal work accomplished to date.”
Emphasizing the urgency, the LPAI
chairman stressed the importance of completing the project promptly on both
sides.
During the visit, discussions were held
between Aditya Mishra and a Bangladesh delegation, led by Project Director
Ramgarh Port, Sarwar Alam. Debasish Nandi, the Agartala manager of the Land
Ports Authority of India, shared, “The LPAI aims to initiate passenger movement
through the Sabroom land port in February, given that progress on cargo
handling facilities has been relatively slow on the Bangladesh side.”
Nandi further explained, “Efforts are
being intensified to commence passenger movement through Sabroom land port next
month, considering that the Matri Setu, connecting both sides across the
international border, was inaugurated in 2021. Cargo movement, however, may
take more time as the required facilities are yet to be in place in Bangladesh’s
Ramgarh.”
For the construction of the versatile
land port capable of handling both cargo and passengers in Sabroom, an
allocated budget of Rs 232 crore has been earmarked. The impending opening of
this strategic land port is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and
trade relations between Tripura and Bangladesh.
