In a poignant tribute to the valiant
freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem, the Meghalaya Government is set to unveil a
life-size statue and bust in Dhaka on February 16. The event, to be attended by
a delegation led by Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Deputy Chief Minister
Sniawbhalang Dhar, will mark a significant occasion in commemorating the legacy
of U Tirot Sing Syiem.
Speaking on behalf of the Meghalaya Government,
spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh conveyed they are coordinating with the India High
Commission in Bangladesh for the program, underscoring the diplomatic efforts
invested in honouring the freedom fighter.
U Tirot Sing Syiem stands as one of the
three distinguished freedom fighters from Meghalaya, alongside U Kiang Nongbah
from Jaintia Hills and Pa Togan Sangma from Garo Hills. Renowned for their
unwavering resistance against British colonial rule, these figures hold a
revered place in the history of Meghalaya.
U Kiang Nongbah, a Jaiñtia freedom
fighter, led a notable uprising against the British and was publicly hanged on
December 30, 1862, at Iawmusiang in Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills district.
The unveiling of U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue serves as a testament to the
enduring respect and remembrance of the sacrifices made by these freedom
fighters for their homeland.
This event not only pays homage to U
Tirot Sing Syiem’s pivotal role in the fight for freedom but symbolizes the
rich history and cultural heritage of Meghalaya. It stands as a profound
acknowledgment of the indomitable spirit that shaped the region’s struggle for
independence.
