The Border Roads Organisation-BRO is set
to fence a significant portion of the strategic Bharat-Myanmar border, with a
10-km stretch in Manipur already finished, revealed a senior official. The Home
Affairs Ministry has identified approximately 1,700 km for fencing, aiming to
enhance security along the border.
BRO’s Additional Director General (East)
PKH Singh stated the organisation has successfully fenced the initial 10 km
along the Manipur border in Moreh, recently handed over to the Assam Rifles.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had
previously announced plans to secure the Bharat-Myanmar border with barbed
fencing, similar to the Bharat-Bangladesh border, signalling a reassessment of
the free movement agreement with Myanmar.
Four Indian States – Arunachal Pradesh,
Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram – share a 1,643-km border with Myanmar.
ADG Singh disclosed the next 80-km
stretch in Manipur has been identified, with the detailed project report (DPR)
already submitted to the ministry. The remaining 250 km, along with approach
roads, is in the planning stage, and the DPR is under preparation.
Fencing the Bharat-Myanmar border is a
crucial project for the BRO, addressing long-standing security concerns in the
Moreh region. The ADG highlighted the organisation’s extensive plan of nearly
Rs 30,000 crore for the Northeast over the next five years, with a significant
focus on Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
Apart from border fencing, the BRO is
actively engaged in diverse infrastructure development projects, including road
connectivity, bridges, tunnels, protection works, airfields, and more, in the Northeastern
States and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The organisation’s primary emphasis
remains on the strategic infrastructure development of the Bharat-China Border
Roads or ICBR in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, with numerous completed and
ongoing projects contributing to enhanced connectivity and security along the
border.
