In a spectacular display of camaraderie,
two Rafale fighter jets, accompanied by a ‘Phoenix’ multi-role tanker transport
aircraft of the French air force, adorned the skies over Delhi as Bharat celebrated
its 75th Republic Day. French President Emmanuel Macron, the chief guest at the
grand parade, witnessed the awe-inspiring moment along with thousands of
spectators.
The French presence included a 30-member
band contingent that captured attention during the parade, marking the second
time French armed forces participated in Bharat’s Republic Day celebrations.
The previous instance was in 2016 when French troops became the first foreign
military contingent to partake in the significant ceremonial event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was
the guest of honour at the Bastille Day Parade in Paris in July last year,
reciprocated the gesture as the Indian Air Force’s Rafale fighter jets and a
tri-services marching contingent participated in the Bastille Day parade.
As the French marching contingent made
its way down the Kartavya Path, the two Rafale jets, originating from the 104 “Al
Dhafra” air base in the United Arab Emirates, and the Airbus A330 multi-role
tanker transport aircraft flew in an impressive triangle formation.
The Phoenix MRTT showcased its
capability to refuel two fighters simultaneously or a single surveillance
aircraft, carrying up to 110 tonnes of fuel.
Led by Captain Noel Louis, the French
military contingent, comprising around 95 legionnaires, included six Indians.
These legionnaires, known for their iconic ‘White Cap,’ have been deployed in
various combat missions, demonstrating their prowess in Afghanistan, Mali, and
French overseas territories.
Expressing gratitude, President Macron
posted on social media, “A great honour for France. Thank you, India.” He also
posted a video capturing the French band and military contingents marching in
front of around 70,000 spectators.
The Republic Day celebration not only
showcased the military prowess of both nations but also underscored the
strengthening defence and strategic ties between Bharat and France, paving the
way for collaborative efforts in advanced defence technologies and expanding
cooperation in the maritime domain, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region.
