Renowned Indian model-actor and fitness
icon Milind Soman has announced his participation in a marathon event in Sikkim
dedicated to the drivers of the State. The West Point Sikkim Sarathi Run, aimed
at focussing the invaluable contributions of these unsung heroes, is scheduled
for February 18.
Expressing his excitement for the event,
Soman shared, “Big thank you… for organizing this run dedicated to the unsung
heroes, our sarathis. I eagerly anticipate your full participation as we shine
our spotlight on their remarkable contributions.”
Last year, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem
Singh Tamang Golay declared July 27 as a restricted holiday dedicated to
drivers, officially referred to as “sarathis.” Additionally, the formation of
the Sikkim Sarathi Welfare Board was announced to support professional drivers
and their families.
Gangtok Smart City Ltd additional
director Dipankar Lama emphasized the significance of the inaugural run,
stating it “marks a special dedication to the esteemed gurujis (another term
for drivers) and sarathis in Sikkim. The core purpose behind this event is to
position Sikkim as a leading running destination nationally, shedding light on
the pivotal role played by the sarathis in fostering the State’s tourism growth”.
The 10-km run, set to take place in
Gangtok, boasts a prize money of Rs 12.5 lakh and has attracted international
participants like Mira Rai from Nepal, who expressed eagerness for her team to
join the event.
Many attribute CM Golay’s recognition of
drivers to their significant support during the 2019 Sikkim Assembly polls,
which saw Golay unseating Pawan Chamling after his 25-year rule. Sonam Ondup
Bhutia, chairman of the All Sikkim Chalak Welfare Board, expressed gratitude to
Golay for the initiative.
