The MPs of the Maldives’ ruling coalition (People’s National Congress and Progressive Party of Maldives) and the Bharat-friendly Oppositions (The Maldivian Democratic Party and The Democrats) engaged in a violent brawl during an ongoing special session to grant approval to the four members of President Mohamed Muizzu’s Cabinet.
The clash occurred in the Parliament when former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s main Opposition party refused to grant approval to the four members. Consequently, the ruling coalition government members confronted the Speaker after entering the chambers and led to disruption of the proceedings.
The brutal scuffle, particularly between Kanditheemu MP Abdulla Shaheem Abdul Hakeem Shaheem and Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa, resulted in Shaheem’s head injuries admission to the hospital.
The ruling coalition parties termed the disapproval as a barrier to progress and public service delivery. They additionally demanded the resignation and filed no-confidence motions against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem over their failure “to intervene and put stop to this” and actively encouraging the fight.
