A significant step towards easing traffic congestion in Manipur capital was taken as Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated the Imphal Ring Road Project, a colossal venture worth Rs 1,766 crore.
Situated at Takyel Khongbal Maning Leikai under Patsoi constituency, the project aims to mitigate the surging issue of traffic congestion in the city with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank or ADB.
Addressing the gathering, CM Biren Singh emphasized the pressing need to address the traffic woes plaguing Imphal due to population growth. The Ring Road Project, slated for completion by 2026, stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure for the betterment of citizens’ lives. He appreciated the ADB for their invaluable support in undertaking this ambitious initiative, poised to bring multifaceted benefits to the State.
Besides, CM Biren Singh shed light on other developmental endeavours, including the Lamphelpat Water Body Rejuvenation Project, a venture estimated at approximately Rs 650 crore. Additionally, plans are underway to connect the recreation center at Lamphel Water Body to the Imphal View Tower via a cable car system, enhancing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
Expressing delight at the resurgence of migratory birds following the rejuvenation of the Lamphel Water Body, the CM underscored the government’s efforts to address environmental concerns. Initiatives such as cleaning the Nambul River and implementing a pipeline system for household waste disposal reflect the administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, CM Biren Singh announced plans to develop the ground at Takyel Khongbal Maning Leikai and allocate finance for the enhancement of Oriental College in Patsoi Assembly Constituency. Road development projects, including those in Patsoi AC, are also slated for implementation to bolster infrastructure and connectivity across the region.
In light of challenges facing Manipur, CM Biren Singh reaffirmed the government’s resolve to safeguard the State’s unity against divisive forces. Urging unity among the populace, he emphasized the collective responsibility to thwart any attempts at disintegration.
Speaking on the technical aspects of the Ring Road Project, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam highlighted its inception in 2015-16, with final approval secured in 2020. Spanning a total distance of 51.23 km, the project incorporates innovative features such as a noise pollution control mechanism, setting a new standard for environmentally sustainable road construction in Bharat.
The road’s design includes sections with four lanes covering 9.5 km, along with 41.5 km featuring two lanes and paved shoulders. Noteworthy amenities, including food plazas and designated lanes for cyclists and joggers, are integrated into the project to enhance user experience and promote healthy living.
With the ADB sanctioning Rs 1,374.75 crore for road and bridge construction, the project’s total cost is shared between the State, Central Government, and the ADB. A significant portion of the ADB’s contribution comprises grants, underlining the collaborative efforts driving Manipur’s infrastructure transformation.
The inauguration of the Imphal Ring Road Project heralds a new era of progress and connectivity for Manipur, marking a significant milestone in the State’s journey towards sustainable development and prosperity.
