In a significant move to bolster dragon fruit farming, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has unveiled a Rs 31.34 crore initiative to construct a crucial link road connecting Dragon fruit plantations in Lamlian Dung Zau, Thenzawl.
During the third general assembly of the Thenzawl Dragon Fruit Growers & Marketing Society at Gaby’s Farm, CM Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of infrastructure for the thriving dragon fruit industry in Mizoram. The allocated funds aim to address this need by facilitating better connectivity for farmers.
While acknowledging the burgeoning dragon fruit production in the region, CM Lalduhoma assured the allocated amount, though insufficient for a metal road, will ensure the construction of a well-graded and accessible road for transportation purposes.
He commended the agreement between Local Soda Private Limited and the farmers, which ensures a steady market for the produce.
Since 2021, around 50 farmers in Mizoram have established dragon fruit plantations covering an area of 82.79 hectares in Lamlian Dung Zau. Supported by government initiatives like MIDH and FOCUS, 129 units with drip irrigation systems have been set up, with plans for an additional 150 units.
Each unit yields approximately 30 kg of dragon fruit, offering substantial revenue potential at the current market rate. Additionally, Local Soda Private Limited has agreed to purchase dragon fruit at a competitive rate of Rs 150 per kg directly from farmers, further incentivizing cultivation.
