Assam’s iconic Rang Ghar, a significant symbol of the Ahom dynasty’s architectural heritage in Sivasagar district, will go through major renovation work to enhance its tourism potentiality in the World Map. This project, taken by the Assam Government, acknowledges its historical and cultural importance.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in X post wrote, “Preserving indigenous monuments and traditions is a key area of focus for the State Government. Will be amidst the people of Sivasagar shortly for the Ban-Phi and Bhumi Pujan of the Rang Ghar beautification project; an enduring icon of Assam’s civilisational heritage.”
Under the ambitious project, additional land of 78 bigha acquired from the people will be beautified to keep the heritage area free of encroachment with contribution of 5 bigha of government land making it total of 83 bigha project land.
The Assam Government, which is committed to oversee the conversation, maintenance, protection, and restoration of Sivasagar’s heritage sites, plans to build additional state-of-the-art auditorium, gallery, MP theatre and a heritage village on the acquired land.
Aspiring to include Jorhat district’s significant sites like Charaideo Maidam in UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites the government will renovate it along with Lachit Maidam.
The Rang Ghar is popular as Asia’s first amphitheatre or pavilion built by Swargadeo Promotta Singha with unique octagonal base in 1744 AD. Ahom kings and nobles also used its two-story structure as the royal sports pavilion to enjoy traditional games such as buffalo fights, mainly during the Rongali Bihu festival at Rupahi Pathar.
