In the series of shocking occurrences involving killing of Indian origin students in the United States, 19 years’ old Shreyas Reddy Benigeri is the latest to be found dead in Ohio. The deceased, a student at the Lindner College of Business, hailed from Hyderabad but held American citizenship. While authorities have ruled out foul play or a hate crime, the Indian Mission in New York has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shreyas’ death.
This grim discovery is the fourth tragic event. Neel Acharya, a student at Purdue University, was found dead after going missing, while Vivek Saini was fatally attacked by a homeless man in Georgia. Additionally, Akul Dhawan was found deceased outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with the cause of death attributed to hypothermia.
These incidents have sparked concerns among the Indian community, with questions raised about the safety and well-being of Indian students studying abroad. Despite the assurances of authorities, parents and relatives of the victims have expressed frustration and demanded answers, highlighting issues of negligence and inaction in some cases.
With the influx of students to the US in recent years, concerns about student safety and welfare have become increasingly prominent. As the investigation into Shreyas Reddy Benigeri’s death continues, it underscores the need for greater attention to the security and support systems for international students in the US.
