In a significant move for Tamil Nadu’s economic development, the State Government has inked a deal with German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, securing a substantial investment of ₹2,500 crore. The agreement will lead to the development of container terminals and industrial parks in pivotal locations, including Thoothukudi.
The deal was formalized during an overseas engagement in Spain, where Chief Minister MK Stalin is hosting an investors’ summit. Stalin, after holding productive discussions with Hapag-Lloyd’s Managing Director Jesper Kanstrup and Director Albert Lorente, announced the landmark investment commitment.
Stalin affirmed the focus on establishing cargo terminals and industrial hubs, particularly in Thoothukudi and other strategic locations across Tamil Nadu. Moreover, the CM extended invitations to Abertis’ International and Institutional Relations to explore opportunities for enhancing road infrastructure within the State.
Tamil Nadu has already attracted notable investments from Spanish firms like Roca, Gestamp, Gamesa, and Urbaser. Just a day earlier, the Roca Group pledged ₹400 crore to bolster its operations in the Perundurai facility and Global Technical Centre in Sriperumbudur, further accentuating Tamil Nadu’s attractiveness for business expansion.
During engagements in Madrid, Stalin underscored the synergies between Tamil Nadu and Spain, citing cultural parallels such as bullfighting in Spain and Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.
