Northeast Bharat’s railway infrastructure got a groundbreaking budget allocation of Rs 10,369 crore in the Interim Budget 2024-25. This historic decision represents a staggering 388 per cent increase compared to the average budget allocation of Rs 2,122 crore recorded between 2009 and 2014.
In a media briefing, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the strategic significance of the budget, which encompasses a capital outlay exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh crore for the Indian Railways. Underpinning this investment are three transformative railway corridor programs: the Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridor; Port-Connectivity Corridor; and High-Traffic Density Corridor, all aimed at enhancing logistics efficiency and reducing transportation costs while improving passenger train safety.
A considerable portion of the budget is earmarked for the conversion of 40,000 standard railway coaches to Vande Bharat standards, a move geared towards modernising and standardising the rail fleet. Moreover, a comprehensive redevelopment plan for 60 stations across the Northeast promises the implementation of world-class amenities and facilities.
Among the noteworthy initiatives announced is the successful rollout of the ‘One Station One Product’ stall, enabling passengers to access locally produced items directly. This initiative has garnered significant traction, demonstrating profitable growth and encouraging regional businesses.
Vaishnaw expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing projects in the Northeast during the interaction, hailing the dedication of teams working tirelessly, even in challenging terrains, to ensure the expedited completion of projects. Despite the daunting Himalayan landscape, the physical progress of all projects is advancing commendably.
In total, an investment of Rs 81,941 crore is pledged towards the development of railway infrastructure in the entire Northeastern region, displaying a monumental commitment of the Centre to the comprehensive growth and modernisation of railways in this pivotal part of the nation.
