In response to a drone attack on an American base in Jordan, the US military conducted retaliatory air strikes targeting Iranian forces and militia groups backed by Tehran in Iraq and Syria. At least 18 fighters were reported killed in the strikes, which focused on over 85 targets associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force and affiliated militia groups.
US President Joe Biden stressed on while the United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East, it will respond decisively to threats against Americans. The strikes, involving long-range bombers and precision munitions, aimed to neutralise command centers, intelligence facilities, and weapon storage sites used by militia groups and Iranian forces involved in attacks against US and coalition forces.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions, with Iraq condemning the military action as a violation of its sovereignty. Despite prior notification to the Iraqi Government, concerns remain about the impact on regional stability.
The military operation comes amid a backdrop of increased attacks on US and coalition forces in the region, including Yemen’s Huthi rebels targeting international shipping and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The US exit from Afghanistan in 2021 has shifted focus to other areas of conflict, with American troops facing continued threats from Iran-linked armed groups.
