Taking cognisance of the spike in violence and deteriorating security situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, the External Affairs Ministry or MEA in its first advisory directed Indians to avoid travelling to the disturbed area.
Advising Indian citizens already present in Rakhine State to leave it immediately, the MEA advisory notified the State has been facing “disruption of means of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities”.
The extensive, violent situation surfaced in Myanmar since its military captured power in a coup on February 1 in 2021. Resultantly, protesters have been demanding restoration of democracy and the military has been using airstrikes against its opponents.
Rakhine State is among multiple other regions which have been facing the brunt of brutal clashes between the Myanmarese military and armed ethnic groups since last October.
The Indian Government is concerned over arising security situation in the Northeastern States like Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland owing to the escalating hostilities in numerous prominent Myanmarese towns and bordering regions as Bharat and Myanmar shares a 1,640-kilometre border.
In view of the “direct implications” of Myanmar’s deteriorating situation over Bharat, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in the near past urged, “As a neighbouring country and friend of Myanmar, Bharat has long been advocating for complete cessation of violence and Myanmar’s transition towards inclusive federal democracy.”
