In a significant development, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has approved the resignation of V Senthil Balaji, who remained a minister without portfolio even after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate or ED in a money laundering case last June. The announcement came through a statement from Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
Chief Minister MK Stalin had recommended the acceptance of Balaji’s resignation on February 12, leading to the governor’s approval.
“Based on the letter of the Chief Minister… the Governor has approved the recommendation and accepted the resignation of Thiru V Senthilbalaji from the Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers,” stated the Raj Bhavan release.
Senthil Balaji’s departure from the MK Stalin-led council of ministers precedes a crucial hearing on his bail appeal before Justice Anand Venkatesh scheduled for February 14. A trial court had previously rejected his bail plea.
During a previous hearing on January 20, Justice Venkatesh expressed criticism towards Balaji for remaining in the council of ministers despite being incarcerated for 240 days.
Balaji, who shifted allegiance from the AIADMK to the DMK in 2018, was apprehended by the ED on June 14 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, concerning a case originating in 2014 during his tenure as transport minister under the AIADMK Government.
Governor Ravi had issued a contentious order dismissing Balaji from the cabinet following his arrest. However, legal experts contended that the governor lacked such authority, prompting him to suspend his order.
Stalin opted to retain Balaji in his team, later reallocating his portfolios, which included electricity, excise, and prohibition, citing his health concerns.
